Muffler question

I have got an IH624 - muffler went recently and I put on an aftermarket "Stanley" which was actually made for a larger IH (model eludes me) - but it fit (the orignal muffler for a 624 is dear at $300Cdn!). I am getting now some black discharge (doesn't seem to be oil though?) at the outlet pipe and the engine seems to be almost "governed" a bit. Just to be curious, I put the old one back on - no discharge after a day's work and it ran better (though extremely loud!)? Is it possible that the replacement muffler is "choking" it?
