Four hands would be better than two. (The Mrs. was out equalizing the bank account and I had a bee in my bonnet...) Yes, put the shifter sliders in neutral and then slide the upper gears back and forth so the pinion shaft turns freely. That should do it. Would recommend putting a wood block at each end of the housing so you can look under the cover to make sure those forks line up before you take the final plunge. Then pull them and ease her down into place. Once you have done that spin the pinion shaft and shift through each gear to make sure it feels right. Good luck.
