Temp sending unit on M

Working on my older M. Not trying to "restore" it just doing something between a tune-up and an overhaul.

Problem is this - the cable from the original temp gauge to sending unit is completely broken in two spots. Seemingly easiest route was to go out and buy a "universal" gauge and stick it in. But the fitting that holds the probe into the engine on the new unit is smaller and has coarser thread. Been making rounds of auto parts, hardware, plumbing places trying to work out some kind of bushing etc to solve this. So far getting nowhere(boy does that kind of chasing around burn time!!).

Anybody run into this before or have any ideas??
