Don't know much about the 86 Hydro, but towing in gear will tear them up. I don't believe that is what took out the flex plate. What goes out towing in gear are the slippers and swash plate that he slippers slid on because they do not get oiled. The flex plate has to drive the hydro, PTO, and hydraulics if it has done a lot of loader work that will have much to do with flex plate. The hydro is a very good transmision and yes could cost yoy to fix. With the flex plate out you can't test the hydro to see how bad it is.
