H blowing white smoke

I've got a 49 H that runs really good except it blows white smoke. After I run it a few hours there are small oil spots on the hood also. A friend told me the 1st thing he would do was take the head in and have the valves redone. I'm not the most mechanically inclined and would appreciate anybody's opinion on what I should look at. Thanks in advance
