We used to moldboard plow with the 1256 and every fall would add a big stack of split weights to the rear wheels. We used the prescribed IH method in the beginning and had trouble with the notched ears in the outer perimeter of the weights breaking off and ruining valve stems. I decided there had to be a better way and tryed the all thread method. It was much easier to install all those weights and we no longer had broken weights to contend with. IH had trouble with castings in those days because the 1256 had 4 wedge lock wheels replaced under warranty for breaking out in the center. Man, was that a job to replace! I usually had to help the old IH mechanic change them as he had to come to the farm to do it. All the weights, dual hub and 18.4 by 38 tire full of fluid had to be removed, then the wheel itself was ungodly heavy. They had young guys working for them but always sent the one who was about to retire.

On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
