H brake overhaul

Hope I'm not covering old ground but I did'nt find exactly what I need in the archives, so here goes. I have a '50 H that the brake system has been locked up - that is brake pedal will not activate the band lever (I think that is the correct term for the piece that the band hooks to) I had a devil of a time getting the cover off in fact the hub around the shaft pulled thru the cover. And now as I understand the lever should pull out of the rear end casing. Am I right or is there something that holds it in? What is the procedure for pulling this out. Thanks My local Case IH guys are way too young to answer this ?
