Regards your charging problem. Are you sure the voltage regulator has a good ground?? First run wire from the generator field connection to the battery ground. If the generator starts charging, it is OK and you problem is the regulator. Take the wire off and then run the wire from the battery ground to the mounting lug of the regulator that has the ground copper ground wire connected to it. If the generator is charging with that wire connected, then find a good ground on the tractor and permanently connect the wire to ground the voltage regulator. I had a tractor that would not charge until I added that wire to ground the regulator. If the regulator is mounted to a painted surface, it is enough resistance to keep it from charging. The regulator must have near zero ohms to ground for things to work. Even 3 or 4 ohms measured with a meter is too much.
