After you have the generator re-polarized like "the red" said, run the engine at medium to high speed with the lights turned on. You should measure about 7 volts at the armature post; if only 5.5 or 6 and you're probably measuring the battery voltage. This may be regulator or generator problems. Take a jumper wire and with engine running at medium speed ground the field terminal and watch your ammeter or a voltmeter/test light connected to the armature post. You should see high voltage/current production(8-15 volts). Don't run it too high though, the generator is not built for this. If you see the high voltage, the generator is good and the regulator/connections are bad. If it doesn't go high, the generator is bad.
