the rods on my f-20 have punch marks on the side of each rod where the rod bolt goes thru, one punch mark for cylinder one, thru to four punch marks for cylinder four, the rod caps also have the same punch marks. all f-20s that i've taken down, have the same punch marks, and they all face the camshaft side of the crankcase. the punch marks were made with a center punch. i've never taken a h or m down so i don't know if they use shims, but be careful to put each rod and cap back in the same place, turned the same way. do one rod at a time and lay each rod down on a clean (clutter free) surface, that will not be disturbed while you are working on your engine. mark each piston face with a center punch if it's an aluminum piston or a scratch awl (scratch the number on the piston face), if it's cast iron. the face is the part of the piston that faces the fire (top of the piston).
