M Hood

We just finished fixing up an old M and now the hood doesn't fit. The serial number on the block says it a 49 but the plate is missing. When we put the hood back on it is 1 inch short. The hood is 38 1/4 inches long. The breather and exhaust fit fine, but it is 1 inch short in the front and we can't hook one of the latches. Were there several sizes of M Hoods, or is there an adjustment we missed ? Thanks Guys and a Happy turkey day.
