Looks like yours was a distilate tractor but maybe has replacement pistons.
You probably knew it was distilate, the hole in the hood is the big clue.
The domed pistons may have been aftermarket to try and increase the compression ratio of the engine to make it run gas better. I've heard of people shaving the head also to lower the space in the combustion chambers and increase compression.
A head for this tractor shouldn't be that hard to find, but if the crack is really small I'd bet you could repair it easier. Or just run it the way it is. I'm sure that many have been run that way over the years.
From what you've said I would see if I could get somebody to weld the crack and then do a good careful head job and put 'er back together. Warm it up careful and tighten the bolts again. Maybe ask Red for his timing for that, he seems to have it worked out real well.
While I was doing the head job I think I'd put all the same springs in, just to keep things uniform. I'd try and get the original size, but if that were unavailable you could use the shorter ones with some appropriately sized spacers.
