I just went through the same ordeal about a month ago. I put about 1/3 of a can of PB Blaster on the nuts over the course of 2 weeks, which allowed me to pull both cotter pins out, but I still couldn't get the nuts to budge. Next thing I did was get a long 5/8" (or was it 9/16"?) box end wrench that I could get some leverage with -- still nothing. So I finally had success with the help of an oxy-acetylene torch. I got the nuts cherry red and the first spun right off. The second one started to come off, but then the stud gave way and spun right out. When I get round to putting the whole thing back together, I think I'm going to put stainless studs and nuts in with plenty of anti-sieze to save the next guy the aggrivation 40 years from now. One word of caution -- the mice seemed to build the best nests back in that part of the frame rails -- make sure to clean it out good before introducing the flame.
