gasket replacement help needed

need to replace valve cover gasket. tractor has steering pump so i cant spin pump around as hoses prevent it. alt. on side and manifold on other. id rather not touch alt as it is in perfect position, should i remove manifold?? OR lift the cover up as much as possible and cut new gasket in one spot and slide it in place. the current gasket has a cut too above spark plugs. it is a 350
