I have also torn out miles of old copper wire that we are going to sell for scrap. The old elevator cable is a real pain to get rid of. Scrap iron yards won't take it because it has a hemp rope core surounded by steel strands and the hemp wraps around the safts on their shredders. Land fills won't take it, either. The stuff ought to be good for something but I haven't figured out what. It is 1/2 inch in diameter and when new the breaking strength is 17,500 pounds. A maintenance man at the hospital took some of it and there is still a lot left at our office to dispose of.
