I just bought a nice old M this weekend and have begun to fix some little things, changed oil, etc. When I went to look up its serial number, the ID plate confused me. It appears to read: FBK 1 90932 x1 Which makes it a '49. The problem is that the first "1" is taller and separate from the other numbers. It's stamped a little deeper too. I was thinking that perhaps the factory simply stamped that "1" to accomodate the additional digit. Any thoughts on this? If someone out there has a '49 (actually late '45-up) could you take a look at yours sometime? I know it doesn't make a lot of difference whether it's a '45 or a '49 (although I think they improved bottom end strength around '47), but I'd just like to know.
