Stuck valves are always a possibility. I ran into them with an engine that had just had the valves re-done a few weeks before. I also found 3 stuck valves on the current project that had sat for an unknown period.

It is really easy to check. Do so. Remove all the plugs, and hold a thumb over each hole while cranking through 2 revolutions. Any cylinder that doesn't push your thumb off probably has a stuck valve. If an exhaust valve is stuck, the engine can still start and run poorly, but if an intake is stuck...no way can it run.
