I did a similar thing with the air cleaner on my Super C. I drilled the rivets out as you stated and took the wire mesh out, fixed the dents and cleaned the mesh by soaking it in lacquer thinner for a few days then reassembled the unit. I din't replace the mesh with a paper filter. The old oil bath cleaner works good and I clean and change the oil in it about twice a season and the engine oil twice a year. (This is plenty since I don't run but about 2 tanks of gas through the Super C's in an entire year).
