OK guys, I am finally getting a Farmall M, thanks to a couple GENEROUS people. Condition is as follows: Paint is average, tires good, show weather checking, steering and clutch are both tight, so I woud think it has seen less than average use, tin is PERFECT-straightest I have seen.. All for just under $1,000.00. Good buy? I am in MN by the way. NOW for the paint. How many gallons of paint will it take to do the whole tractor? I can't spend TOO much on paint. I read a post down the page here on around 30$/gallon. That isn't too bad. Is sanding down to the bare metal a good idea, and then priming- 2 thin coats, and then painting-2 thin coats. Is clear coat basically just a shine enhancer? I know t rotects the outer layer of paint, but is it REALLY necessary? I don't have room in my garage for this M, but I will be keeping it under a tarp, and in the trees,so it will see less rain and snow. I will also be adding a JD # 45 loader onto it, or a McCormick loader. Any pointers t which is better? I KNOW this is an IH board, so I will most likely get "go with the McCormick". I just don't like the style of the McCormicks.. The JD 45 looks nice on a M. Will be using ths M for snow removal, movin dirt around the yard, and just pullin logs around. Any help will be appreciated.

Oil Bath Air Filters - by Chris Pratt. Some of us grew up thinking that an air filter was a paper thing that allowed air to pass while trapping dirt particles of a particles of a certain size. What a surprise to open up your first old tractor's air filter case and find a can that appears to be filled with the scrap metal swept from around a machine shop metal lathe. To top that off, you have a cup with oil in it ("why would you want to lubricate your carburetor?"). On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
