I'm hoping for you that it doesn't turn out to be a badly cracked head that's contributing to both problems. On the carb, check out your manifold and gasket, and the carb gaskets (at the manifold, and between the bowl and the body). If you have to keep it choked, you're getting too much air from somewhere. MY SuperC had the problem before I rebuilt it. On the manifold end, check the vconditin of the gaskets and torque the manifold back down well, and check the manifold itself for cracks, rusted through holes, and the like. Same twith the carb gaskets and body. If everything is tight, you can try tinkering with the idle adjustment screw, but your problem sounds severe enough I think the it's going to turn out to be an air leak somewhere. I'll defer to the others who have had more experience on the headgasket problem.
