First thing I would check is the impulse on the magneto. If that spring breaks your timing will be off. The other thing to check and make sure of is that the nut on the impulse coupling is tight and locked with the tab. Now turn the engine in direction of rotation with cap off and listen for a snap when the impulse trips and see if your on with no. 1. Also check for a nut for the steering shaft at a parts house. Take the old one along and match it with front spindle nut for automotive hardware. The nut has to be tight against the bearing to hold it in place, that in turn butts against the 2" outer rim of the plug to keep it from walking in the bore. Good luck.
