I don't know why they didn't switch over to 12V coils earlier. Maybe it was cheaper to just add the resistor? Maybe they didn't want to stock two coils at all their dealerships? Another advantage to using the 6V coil is that you can hook them up to start on 12V, then switch back to 6V to run. They start better that way.

The resistor on the diesel must limit current through something, you'd need a wiring diagram to know what.
