I think the head gasket problem is common on these engines. I fought the battle twice and eventually won both. The gaskets I had were from the IH dealer and said right on them "sealer and retorque required" I used coppers spray on both the block and head. Torque to spec or a little over. Ran it hot and then re-torqued them. Make sure you recheck your valve clearances again after you re-torque. Carb issue - check for good flow to carb (lines, gas cap vent, dirty carb inside jets). Also check for vacuum leaks, intake manifold gaskets, manifold for rust holes. Make sure your idle mixture screw is adjusted right ( I'm not sure what it should be for sure, but usually 1 1/2 turn out will get you close then adjust to get it fast and smooth) Good Luck
