Carburetor cleaning

Would like to hear from people with good experiences in cleaning up/off the layers of sandstone like stuff accumulated on the outside of the cast iron carburetor housing.

I'm working on a '57 450 and it has multiple layers separated by coats of red paint. I've been picking away at stuff that's about the consistency of sandstone with a screw driver and I'm not liking the results.

The good news is that the inside is relatively clean and in good shape. Solvent spray cleaner seems to work good in there.

Please share any tricks that work. Many thanks in advance, IHank in Iowa
