The first thing to do with that loose steering is to find out WHERE the slack is. The problem is likely an accumulation of wear in various places. The universal joint under the hood is easy to replace, and is often a big source of this. Don't overlook the bearing next to the universal. Lots of those old Farmalls haven't been close to a grease gun in years, and if that support bearing is shot, it will let things move around. At the front of the gearbox on top of the front bolster is a little ball bearing. That ball bearing can cause more play for it's size than anything else in the system. They are particularly apt to be bad if a loader has been used on the tractor. They don't cost much, and they are easy to replace. The worm and sector assembly in the gearbox is worth checking while you're in there. Also.....if that gearbox is dry, the lubricant has leaked out past the upper bolster bushing. If that has happened, the bushing is shot. The lower part of the bolster has a bushing also. They are not fun to replace, but if you're careful, you can do it. Make certain the tractor is SECURELY blocked up before you attempt that bushing replacement! Another source of play is the front wheel bearings. Run one tire at a time up on something about 4" high and see if the other wheel is loose. Have fun!
