You should be able to get all the parts you need to fix your distributor. If you can't, rebuilt ones are available. As to the magneto versus battery ignition. The IH magnetos indeed do not have spark advance. But unless you are into pulling or something like that, it doesn't make much difference. You can also get all the parts you need for the mag. I have two tractors that have IH H-4 magnetos. I don't think anything much has been done to either and they are both over 50 years old and they still start and run fine. I did put new points and condenser in one and just new points in the other because I did not want to bother taking the mag off. The condenser in the one I changed looked like it was original. The advantage of the magneto is that it requires no electricity from a battery to run. If the battery goes down you keep on going. Or you can crank or pull start and you are going. The advantage of the distributor is as mentioned before, you have spark advance, and also you get a hotter spark for starting which makes starting much easier. However, with 12 volts on the starter, I've had no trouble getting the tractors with magnetos to start easily. I've even thought about converting the tractor I have with the battery ignition to a magneto. I think it would look better because the battery ignition does not have an original coil and so far, I have not been able to locate a coil that looks original.

Sadly though all his efforts seemed to be a waste of time and money as he still couldn''t get the temperamental old thing to run correctly!! If i said that this was a little frustrating for him that would be "conservative" in fact the problem had reduce
