I'll take a magneto over a battery ignition every time on a low-speed engine. No matter what shape the battery is in, you can get spark. The impulse coupling provides 20-30 degrees of advance, although it is fixed and not continuously variable like a distributor. The advance requirements on an engine that runs at 1500 RPM are minimal. I've never yet had a mag I couldn't get fire out of.
