Dad got the M when I was about 8 years old. I could handle the clutch on our H, but the M was simply too stiff for me to engage it smoothly. A few weeks after he got it, he came home with a little attachment purchased at the local IH dealer. It extended the clutch arm coming out of the left side of the tractor, nearly doubling its length. Simple little thing, mounts with one pin and the clutch rod adjustment is then lengthened slightly to make things work properly again. When I was in high school, we bought a SuperM at a sale. Within about 2 days, Dad had purchased the same attachment for it, as his left knee had seen better days by then! As mentioned in a previous post, there was a rod available (about 3/16" diameter) that mounted on the light bracket and when it was pulled, it actuated a small lever that pushed down on the front of the brake lock. My M and SM have those also, and I think they came from the IH dealer. My 43H has a heel-operated brake lock that replaced the original toggle. When the brake pedal is pushed, the lock can be applied with your heel. It's the only one like it I've ever seen. It wouldn't be practical on an M, as the pedals curve up over the platform and would make it very difficult to use. If someone could find some mid-1950's vintage M&W, Tractor Supply, and similar catalogs, they would have a goldmine of information on these and other attachments.

It was on one such Saturday in the early 1940's when Sam was 16 years old that he ended up in Dennison, Kansas to watch a demonstration of a new tractor being put on by a local dealer. It was an Allis-Chalmers tractor dealership,
