The ammeter will tell you how the charging system is doing. At idle with the lights off it will show a slight discharge. At full RPM with lights off it should show between +5 and +15 amps (about 1/2 scale to the charge side if you've got a zone ammeter).

With lights ON and idling, expect about -10 amps. At full RPM and lights on should show about +2 to +5 amps.

If the ammeter stays on the "-" (discharge) side of 0 at full RPM, it says the charging system is not working - you're running off the battery.
