You ever been up to Cochrane ON? Way north of the Sault, but back in the 30's (or something) they tried farming up there because of the great clay belt (I know my dates are off...someone please correct me!). I was up there 3 summers ago, and you can still see all the old barns out in the woods, and there are still a few surveyed concessions left. If you get the good Town&Country map, you can see them laid out. The thing that killed farming was the early frosts (in August for a few years). It's a really interesting thing to read about. I'm from just east of Chatham, ON, but still in the banana belt! You ever go to the essex antique shows? I was to one that was really good except for the 100 degree temps that day!
