Sorry to hear about the kid getting killed. I can understand the "can't booby-trap a mail box" thing, so how about this: build a cage around the box with iron pipe. Fill the pipes driven into the ground with concrete. Paint the cage a reflective fluorescent orange so that the kids will see it at a distance before they try to whack it, and put up a warning sign. They might decide not to try it when they see it. The law can't say that the box was booby-trapped, because it was obvious to everyone that the box is protected. There is still the kid-gets-hurt-and-the-owner-get-sued possibility, but it's a thought.
