I haven't looked at the Nebraska test data for those two tractors. I'd be inclined to bet that the 300 was probably running in 1st gear with the TA lever pulled back, and straining for all it was worth if it out-performed an M! A bone-stock 300 working in the field against a bone-stock-original-out-of-the-box M might come close to keeping up, until the plow or whatever was being pulled got to a tough spot, then the M would just keep moving, while the 300 would be slowing down. Part of the problem in comparing the two tractors is that finding a bone-stock-original-configuration M is just about impossible! Most of those old beasties have been upgraded to 264 CID when overhauled, and there aren't many that haven't had the governor fiddled with to the point of running much, often MUCH, faster than the original stock RPM setting. Lots of rough-looking old M tractors will put out close to (or even over) 50hp. The 300 is more refined, has lots of very desireable features, and is a BIG improvement over an H. It's only an improvement over an M when brute strength or lugging ability isn't the desired outcome!
