Farm Cub power-take off problem

I have a 1958 Farmall Cub that has a noise in the transmission area--"a click click etc" and we checked the gears and final drives and could find nothing. Then all of a sudden I could not engage the power-take-off as it seems to be locked up(it works the mower). I was wondering if any one else has incurred this kind of a problem and what might be the trouble. I suspect that it may be related to the noise that I have been hearing in the transmission area.
