James - My experience (and that of many others) is the 10SI alternator regulator is both precise and dependable. It'll charge hard - up to the output rating of the alternator - until the battery is almost fully charged. When it senses the battery is fully charged it will taper the output down to a couple of amps so it won't overcharge the battery. As for the ammeter going beyond full scale and pegging, don't worry about it - it won't harm the ammeter a bit. I've had a 55 amp alternator on a Super M that pegs the 20 amp ammeter every time I start up. It's been doing this for 20+ years (thousands of starts) and the ammeter is doing fine. My recommendation is to leave the system alone - it sounds like it is working fine!
