John, it sounds like it might be the live power gear on bottom shaft in the transmission. It's kind of a pain, but should be checked and in all probability was overlooked when the TA was rebuilt. If you remove the inspection cover on bottom of clutch housing to rear of tractor. Look in side to rear, there is a large pipe plug, which has to be removed. At this point have the tractor drained down some on HY-TRAN or face her uphill quite steeply and block well. With that plug removed you will find I believe a 1/2 inch bolt 3/4" socket will fit it. The original washer that held that gear to the shaft was a thin hardened one the later was a heavier one with a longer bolt. What happens is the washer breaks and the gear walks around in there. Another possibility would be the splines in the pressure plate getting worn badly. Hope that helps. Happy Holidays.

What a surprise to open up your first old tractor's air filter case and find a can that appears to be filled with the scrap metal swept from around a machine shop metal lathe. To top that off, you have a cup with oil in it ("why would you want to lubricate your carburetor?"). On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
