I would almost bet my next paycheck that the rear has water in it. My father-in-law would build a small fire under the rear housing when his froze up. Why he didn't change the oil I don't know. Also, you could have a froze up shifter fork that slides directly under the main deck. I had one do the same thing, but mine had a broken shifter fork. I welded it up, and all is well. If that is the case, be sure to find the balls and springs that fall into the rearend if the shifter fork is broken. If you don't, it will get under the bull gear and bust out a big chunk of the rear casting.
