My first thought when you said "it either starts right after I let go of the starter" - is that the voltage is getting pulled too low with the starter on and as soon as you let off you get good spark. This would also explain why it starts when you pull it. You must have a battery coil ignition (not magneto) by the sounds of it. I would start with a good battery and also check all connection because the connections all give voltage drops depending on the corrosion, etc. If this doesn't work look at replacing points, condensor, etc. I don't think the timing would all of a sudden change, or you compression all of a sudden be the problem either.
