I expect your tractor is a 6 volt system. With 6 volts your never going to crank the engine very fast. With a 6 volt system you want to make sure all your electrical connections are in very good shape. That means they are clean, tight and no bad wires. Concerning your tractor running bad, would you say it starts running bad after it has warmed up? Its possible to have a leak in the intake manifold that opens up after is warms up. Its also possible to have a bad coil that becomes noticable after it has warmed up. When your tractor starts running poorly, try opening the choke a little. If it makes the tractor run better it could be a leak in the manifold. If your tractor only runs bad when its under some load (driving in 5th gear could be load enough) then I would suspect it needs new points and condenser. Concerning your crank, I think there should be a grease fitting where the crank passes through the front end and makes contact with the pulley on the crank shaft. All the possibilities I've mentioned come from similar experiences with my 43 M.
