A couple years ago I saw a Massey Harris 44 row crop with a front (rear) axle from a late JD 55 combine. It was a clean slick set up, utilizing the steering controls from the combine. The axle was widened, and supported by a fabricated front bolster. The steering pump was driven off the bottom crank pulley, all plumbing/valve mounted inside the frame behind the clutch housing. The steering control valve was mounted at the bottom of the upper steering shaft, the lower shaft was no longer needed and discarded. The same could be done with your M, and if yours has live hydraulics, you would not need the steering pump set up. This 44 was slick, and the wide front end made it better in my opinion.
