We had a John Deere M and later a Farmall A. I think the M had a little more power, but didn't handle as easily and was harder to get on/off of. The M did have live hydraulics though. The manual for the M listed 4th gear at 10 5/8 mph if I remember correctly. The real difference was in 1st gear, the M only went 1 5/8 mph at rated rpm, the A was faster.
