There is a difference in the two sides. The side the bendix would catch has a slight bevel to it. Hard to believe looking at it that it could make a lot of difference, but it does. If your existing gear is otherwise in good shape and you have the tools, you might try putting a bevel edge on the flat side. As for getting it off and back on, a little heat and some tapping around it with a brass rod or an oak dowel should get it off. To put it back on, I'd use a torch or an oven (if the bride is out of the house) to get the ring up to about 500 degrees, especially if the old side is chewed up. That should expand it enough to keep any burrs and whatnot from making problems putting it back in place. Good luck!
