TerryC: Follow Stan's advice first. My suggestion to use a small jack and a 1x2 to put upward pressure next to the main cap being checked was to eliminate POSSIBLE false readings. Example: The rear main had a flywheel weigth etc pulling the crank down and your trying to measure from the bottom. It seemed to always make sence to me to put some pressure upward on the crank to eliminate this. Maybe 75 pounds worth to keep the crank touching the top bearing. (I generally place the 1x2 against the rod cap next to the main being measured)If the crank is touching the top bearing, all the clearance(total wear) will be present on the bottom. That's all I am trying to insure. This takes longer to explain than it does to do it. When I do the rods I'll place a 20 pound lead tube on the topside of the piston to keep it pressing downward. Simple? Don't make this complicated. If it sounds like it is, then just follow Stan's info. R.
