The generator can be polarized for either positive or negative ground. The regulator however is positive or negative, not interchangable. If you hooked it up backwards, the regulator probably is ruined.
Sometimes you can tell which polarity the regulator is by looking on the bottom, it may be marked. If not, you may have to find the part number and have it looked up.
If this is recently stopped charging, and you hadn't made any changes, sombody before you may have switched it to negative ground.
