What model tractor do you have? Most 6 volt systems are positive ground. If the generator is working and the battery is hooked up backwards it should show discharge on the amp gauge. Also if the battery or regulator have been disconnected, then the generator needs to be repolarized. Try hooking the battery up with the positive post grounded and then before you start the tractor, touch a wire between the "BAT" terminal of the regulator and the "A" terminal of the generator for a second or two. Then start the tractor and see if it's charging. Reversing the polarity can cause arcing and burning of the contact points in the regulator so you may need to check that too.
