Thanks for your comments. Yes, one should use the axial 'clearance' to find an smooth spot on the shaft for the seal to ride on. And another factor that determines the life of a seal is the quality of the bearing(s). If the bearing has radial play, the new seal will leak soon.
On my Super A I'm also using some speedy sleeves on worn shafts.
