Yes this was a rather common practice in my area in the 1940s and 1950s. I think the precision left a lot to be desired. I can remember my dad having a rod journal ground in a 1954 chevorlet car. Think it lasted as long as he kept car. The man came out and did job under big pecan tree so I guess this was shade tree mechanic fix. Don't remember what gadget looked like or how it worked.
