If you look at some engine crank seals, they but a wear sleeve(Like the Speedy Sleeves)on at the factory so its servicable. And when you renew the crank seal,This sleeve is in the kit. Or you buy it seperately. When I worked in the tool shop,On some machine spindle's we use to turned an under cut on the seal wear area and spray-welded a ceramic coating, Them finish grind them to size.Hard stuff to grind always use a green stone grinding wheel on this ceramic. This ceramic coating was tougher then any steel and also did not rust or corode. The seals also lasted much longer running on this type of surface. This operation was a little costly. But the machine tool builders have more money to spend on there equipment then most of us.
