As far as I know all factory 4 cycle engines have turned clockwise. Some of the first 2 cycle boat engines had a reverser so you could back up. The engine just stopped and then restarted backwards. A few people have made engines to run counter clockwise - simple, really - just rotate the camshaft 180 degrees and change the timing order and you are set. HOWEVER, the thrust and balance change when an engine rotates the other way so it will vibrate to the point of damage if you run it too fast.

Here is another theory: Most people are right handed and cranking clockwise is the natural thing to do with your right hand. Left handed people would do better cranking counter clockwise, right?
