checking compression on Super C ?

I tried to check the comp. on my old Super C today. Don't know if I did it right. My father in law had an old gauge he had since the 60's so thought I would give it a try. This gauge did not screw in, it has like a rubber stopper on the end you have to hold in the spark plug hole.Had my dad turn the hand crank while I tried to hold this thing over the hole without looseing to much air.It read around 50psi on all the cyl.s. Is that posible it could be that low and still seem to run as well as it does. It does not smoke at all or seem to use any oil. It does have a bad rear main oil leak. Should I get it checked by a more reliable method? I plan on splitting it when it gets a little warmer to repair oil leak, should I plan on a rebuild at that time?
