WD-9 electrical

I am in the process of restoring a IH WD-9, the mechanical problems have been solved. Now I am working on the wiring. The starter and alternator/generator have to be rebuilt...
Would it be wise to have them converted to 12volt?
The old brute is traditionaly hard to turn over so I am leaning towards 12 volt. I am however, concerned about converting the other electrical to 12 volt, lights, switches etc. and do I need additional regulators...
I am a novice at best in the electrical department.
